World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the US Open still suffering an injury that he got during his French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal.
After missing out on Wimbledon, Zverev has decided to skip the final Grand Slam tournament of the season. Zverev, who reached his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open in 2020, won't be making his eighth main draw appearance at Flushing Meadows. In 2020, Zverev reached his first and lone Grand Slam final at the US Open.
"Maybe I could say I'm ready. Best-of-five is difficult," Zverev said 10 days ago: "Every day it really gets better. That's why I don't want to say yet that I won't play the US Open." In July, Zverev said he would play at the US Open only if he felt he would be ready to compete for the title.
Now that Zverev is officially out of the US Open, he is hoping to be ready for the Davis Cup Finals stage, which takes place after the US Open.
